The Supramalleolar Orthosis (SMO) is one of the effective treatments for children that have foot instability including forefoot, mid-foot, and subtalar instability. It is also used to treat severe pronation (flexible pes planus). The pronation is a deformity that causes abnormally low arch.
Supramalleolar Orthoses (SMOs) provides a comfortable ambulation and are fitted for paediatric patients with a low muscle tone but overall good strength. The SMO helps in providing the patient with postural stability and should be used as soon as low tone is diagnosed.
