What Is Functional Electrical Stimulation?
Functional Electrical Stimulation works by delivering small, controlled electrical signals through surface electrodes placed on the skin. These signals stimulate intact peripheral nerves, causing targeted muscles to contract during functional tasks such as walking or reaching.
Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) uses low-level electrical impulses to activate specific muscles that are weak or not activating effectively due to neurological or neuromuscular conditions. The stimulation is timed to movement, helping muscles contract in a functional and task-specific way.
FES can be used to support walking, upper limb function, posture, and overall movement quality, either as an alternative to, or in conjunction with, traditional orthotic management.
Unlike passive treatments, FES is used during active movement, supporting:
Improved muscle activation timing
More efficient movement patterns
Increased functional independence
Active participation in daily activities
FES can function as a dynamic orthotic solution, assisting movement while allowing the user to remain active and engaged.
Conditions Commonly Supported with FES
Functional Electrical Stimulation may be suitable for individuals with:
Stroke
Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Cerebral Palsy
Acquired Brain Injury
Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury
Foot drop
Gait asymmetry or reduced walking efficiency
Upper limb weakness affecting reach, grasp, or release
Suitability is determined through assessment of nerve integrity, movement goals, and individual presentation.
How FES May Assist Function
Depending on the individual and system configuration, FES may assist with:
Improving foot clearance during walking
Supporting more symmetrical gait patterns
Assisting hand opening, grasp, or release
Enhancing postural muscle activation
Supporting task-specific movement training
FES systems can be programmed to stimulate single or multiple muscle groups, depending on functional needs.
In-Clinic & Community FES Trials
We offer both in-clinic and community-based Functional Electrical Stimulation trials, which are an essential part of determining whether FES is the right solution.
In-Clinic Trials
Assessment of suitability and safety
Trial electrode placement and system setup
Observation of movement response
Evaluation of comfort, tolerance, and immediate functional changes
Community Trials
Use of FES in real-world environments
Assessment during everyday walking or functional activities
Evaluation of practical benefit outside the clinic
Increased confidence and informed decision-making
Community trials are particularly valuable in determining true functional benefit, beyond what can be seen in a controlled setting.
